East House supporter Don Zrebiec shares a powerful family story in his newly published book
Longtime East House supporter, donor, and former Board member, Don Zrebiec, shares a deeply personal story of family, mental health, and resilience in his debut book, SHE WAS HERE: Uncovering My Grandmother’s Silence at Willard’s Asylum.
The book uncovers the forgotten history of Don’s grandmother, Catherine Smoral, a Polish immigrant and mother of nine who was committed to Willard State Hospital in the early twentieth century. Through archival research, family interviews, and historical accounts, Don explores the devastating impact of her institutionalization, including the separation of her children and the generational trauma that followed.
While the story reveals painful truths about the historical treatment of individuals experiencing mental health challenges, it also highlights the strength of family, the importance of dignity, and the power of resilience. By sharing Catherine’s story, Don gives a voice to someone whose experiences had been lost to history.
Don’s commitment to preserving dignity and advocating for individuals experiencing mental health challenges closely aligns with East House’s mission. As a longtime supporter, donor, and former Board member, he has played a meaningful role in advancing our work.
Reflecting on his involvement, Don recently shared:
“Out of the many boards that I have served on in my career, East House has been the most meaningful organization I have been a part of.”
As East House celebrates 60 years of empowering individuals in recovery from mental health and substance use disorders, we are grateful for Don’s continued dedication to our mission and his efforts to bring greater awareness to the importance of compassionate, person-centered mental health care.
SHE WAS HERE is more than a family history. It is a powerful reminder that every person has a story worth telling, a life worth honoring, and a legacy worth remembering.
